In nature, waste doesn’t exist …

Everything is food for life.

A pile of organic food and flowers, including wilted roses, lemon, orange, dried leaves, and white flowers.

At COMPOSTARS, we hold a deep respect for ecology, and the resolve to restore and protect it. We are in awe of the intelligence of nature, and we dare to (re)design a world where humans are stewards, not destroyers, of it.

COMPOSTARS exists to leverage our advances in technology and the power of storytelling to expedite a great reversal of these harmful and reversible realities:

  • 40% of American food is thrown away—  a loss of 60 Billion pounds of nutrients to landfills, while our farmlands erode at a rate of 1.7 Billion Tons a year from nutrient depriving industrial farming methods, threatening the food security of all Americans.

  • 25% of U.S. methane emissions come from food in landfills.

  • $218 Billion in resources, time and labor is spent each year growing, transporting and throwing away food that is never eaten.

  • Soil erosion is 2x as bad today as during the Dust Bowl. We are literally running out of soil to farm on because we aren’t returning nutrients (from food scraps) to it.

We can reverse all of this. The solutions have been invented, perfected over billions of years, and are open-sourced. It’s the technology of nature’s own living system, and the work of our time is to reconnect and steward it, not keep interrupting the cycle of life.

OUR VALUES

  • Stewardship: humans at their best are stewards of life

  • Accountability: problems created by us can, and should, be solved by us

  • Interdependence: life on earth is interconnected within a dynamic, living system

  • Respect: Power with, not power over

  • Rigor: to manage, measure

  • Wisdom: stories are essential cultural foundations

  • Illuminate: make the invisible visible
